Personality & Traits

General Overview Dario’s a career Security officer and has never had much interest in becoming a Captain. He likes being hands on and can struggle stepping back, particularly if he thinks he could be useful. He has a dry sense of humour and a sarcastic streak, although rarely malicious. His years in Starfleet saw him through the Dominion War and its aftermath, and rather than making him cynical it made him believe more firmly in what the Federation is meant to stand for rather than whatever version happens to be presented at the time.

Dario is generally level headed and practical. He can be strict with the rules when he thinks there is a reason for them, but is more interested in why a rule exists than following it simply because it does. He has enough experience to know he is not an expert in everything and will listen to people who know more than he does. Those that consider him a friend find him loyal, warm and playful.

He is more likely to volunteer himself for danger, firmly believing that he should not ask someone else to do something he would not be willing to do himself.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
- Maintains a level head when things get chaotic
- Experienced Starfleet officer
- Listens to the expertise of people around him

Weaknesses:
- Finds it easier to recognise other people's bad decisions than his own
- Can get territorial when he feels another department is stepping into Security matters
- Buries his emotions and reactions until a later time. That later time can be after a mission, or in ten years time. Dealer's choice.
Ambitions To be back on an operational ship, and eventually become a department head again.
Hobbies & Interests Sailing, rock climbing, hiking, cooking, history and archaeology, and reading, particularly crime novels, historical fiction and biographies.

Personal History Dario Munro was born in Stromness, Orkney, in 2343, the eldest child of Malcolm Fraser Munro and Sofia Maria Rossi-Munro. Malcolm was originally from Glasgow and worked as a civilian infrastructure engineer, maintaining transport, power and environmental systems across the islands. Sofia, originally from Italy, worked in heritage conservation and archaeology. She had first come to Orkney through her work and fell in love with the landscape, the history and the community, eventually convincing Malcolm that it was where they should make their home.

Dario's younger sister, Elena, was born several years later. Dario grew up as part of a small community where everyone knew everyone, and as such was used to being 'the Munro boy' running around with scraped knees when playing. He was an active child who preferred being outdoors to sitting still for very long, although he was never particularly reckless. Dario did well enough at school without being especially academic, gravitating more towards practical subjects and team sports. By his mid-teens he had begun looking seriously at Starfleet, drawn by the variety of work, the responsibility and the chance to be part of something larger. He applied to Starfleet Academy at eighteen and was accepted.

Dario entered Starfleet Academy in 2361 expecting to pursue Operations, something that felt familiar after growing up around his father's work. He quickly found himself doing better in Security training than he had expected, particularly in situational exercises, emergency response and weapons qualification, and by the end of his first year had changed direction and begun specialising in Security. He was never going to graduate top of his class, but had solid enough marks that no one worried about his performance. Dario graduated in 2365 about where he personally expected himself to be. Not too high on the list, but comfortably away from being voted 'worst Cadet of the year'...which was an actual prize that the instructors did. Just not officially.

His first posting was the USS Beckett, where he served as a Security Officer. His first few years were served on brig duty, mostly because the Beckett had a reputation for the crewmembers getting into scraps. It was actually not as bad as that, but Captain Rellar was a hard taskmaster and would punish even the slightest transgression with the brig. Dario got to know a lot of crewmembers just by guarding them.

In 2370, Dario transferred to the USS Sutherland, a Nebula-class ship, where he remained as a Security Officer. It was a much larger ship than the Beckett and gave him more opportunity to get involved in away missions, investigations and some of the less exciting parts of Security that nevertheless needed doing.

When the Dominion War began in 2373, Dario had been a Security Officer for eight years and thought he had a fairly good idea of what the job involved. The next two years proved him wrong. The Sutherland became part of the Ninth Fleet and was involved in convoy escorts, patrols and fleet operations throughout the war. For Security it meant considerably more time spent on ground assignments, boarding actions, evacuations and guarding prisoners alongside their normal duties aboard ship.

Dario saw his share of combat during the war, both aboard the Sutherland and as part of Security teams sent to the surface. He was injured more than once, although never seriously, and lost friends and people he had served alongside for years. One evacuation in 2374 stayed with him more than most after the Sutherland was forced to withdraw before everyone could be transported from the surface. Dario knew staying longer would have endangered the ship and the people they had already evacuated, but knowing why an order had been given did not necessarily make following it easier.

The Sutherland herself was badly damaged more than once during the war and there were periods when Dario and the rest of Security spent as much time helping with damage control and moving casualties as they did carrying phasers. He learned quickly that being good with a weapon meant very little if he could not keep his head when everything around him was going wrong. By the time the war ended in 2375, he was considerably more experienced than he had been two years earlier, although it was experience he could happily have done without. He spent some time in counselling afterwards before returning fully to duty.

In 2376, after six years aboard the Sutherland, Dario transferred to the USS York as Assistant Chief Security Officer. It was his first real step into departmental leadership and one he had not particularly been looking for, but the experience he had gained during the war made him a natural choice for it. He remained there until 2381 before transferring to the USS Hawking in the same position, where exploratory and more politically sensitive assignments gave him further experience with investigations, undercover work and observational missions.

In 2385, Dario accepted his first posting as Chief Security Officer aboard the USS Gannet. By 2388 he had been in Starfleet for more than twenty years and was approached about moving towards Command, with the possibility of becoming a First Officer. He turned it down. Dario had never seen Security as a stepping stone towards becoming an Executive Officer or Captain and saw little reason to leave work he still enjoyed simply because promotion was available.

Later that year he accepted the position of Chief Security Officer aboard Starbase 621. At first the change suited him. A starbase offered different problems, considerably more people and enough Security work to keep him occupied. After a while, however, Dario began to miss starship duty far more than he had expected. The work was not boring, but the surroundings increasingly were, and after two years he had become thoroughly tired of seeing the same corridors every day.

When an Assistant Chief Security/Tactical position became available aboard the USS Equitas in 2390, the fact it was technically a step backwards bothered Dario considerably less than it probably should have. He had already been a Chief and knew he could run a department. More importantly, the Equitas was a starship.
