The screen went to white before the sleek silver design of the Starfleet symbol appeared on the screen flashing up briefly before disappearing again. It was another moment before the next bit of information appeared - the most important in Zaiden’s opinion:

CONFIDENTIAL COMMUNICATION

Starfleet Command Authorization – Assignment of Commanding Officer, USS Equitas
Stardate: 67086.1
From: Office of Personnel Deployment, Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco, Earth
To: Commander Zaiden F.J.C Isaac
Subject: Official Notice of Command Assignment – USS Equitas

Commander Isaac,

On behalf of Starfleet Operations, I would like to congratulate you formally on your appointment.

Effective four weeks from the date of this correspondence, you are hereby assigned as Commanding Officer of the USS Equitas, NCC‑56240, currently docked at Earth Spacedock for final outfitting and readiness certification. We believe that your service record, leadership qualities, and operational experience have distinguished you as the ideal officer to oversee the launch of this newly commissioned vessel.

Crew Recruitment

Starfleet Personnel has prepared a preliminary roster of recommended officers and enlisted specialists suitable for the class and mission profile of the Equitas, but as Commanding Officer, it is not required to accept these recommendations. You do, however, have the power over the following:

- Assemble your own senior staff i.e request transfers for specific officers
- Submit personnel requests directly to Starfleet Command for expedited approval
- Conduct your own interviews and evaluations of potential crew

The Mission

The USS Equitas has been assigned to conduct quantum slipstream trials along the Romulan border and Starbase 125, a somewhat remote region that is home to an unusually sparse stellar field. This is to be but one of a number of missions designed to test her systems under real‑space conditions while simultaneously supporting Starfleet’s strategic commitments along the Romulan border.

Further instructions regarding the first mission will be relayed to you within the next ten working days.

Reporting Instructions

You are requested to report to Earth Spacedock, Command Level, no later than Stardate 67162.8, to begin the formal transition into command. The following is to be provided at the time:

- A full technical briefing
- Systems review
- Official command handover

Starfleet Command is confident that the USS Equitas will thrive under your leadership as she embarks on her first journey and boldly go into the unknown. Your records reflect resilience and a capacity to inspire those under your command, and we recognize the significance of placing this vessel under your command as a result.

Congratulations again,

Vice Admiral T’Lara Renn
Starfleet Personnel Command

Zaiden stood there for what seemed an eternity as he read and re-read the message again to make sure he was reading it correctly: he’d just been given command of his very first ship. A hand came up to cover his mouth as the grin behind it grew and a small laugh of disbelief slipped out before it turned into a loud one.

He cheered and turned to Helena, “Ha, I can’t believe this, Len! I’ve got my command!” Leaning into her space, Zaiden placed his hands either side of his wife’s face and kissed her hard on the lips before pulling back and looking into her eyes while he smiled. “I couldn’t have done this without you; I love you so much.” Then he kissed her again.

“Congratulations, baby,” Helena smiled wide and wrapped her arms around Zaiden’s neck to savour the moment between them. “You’ve worked so hard for this, and you’ve finally got your dues, well done. They’ve chosen wisely and I already can’t wait to see what this holds for you and for us.” She kissed him again, “The kids are going to be excited as well. And I’m going to have to request for a transfer too, you know. Unless there’s a way I can get a certain someone to request it for me…?” Her fingers walked slowly up his chest as she wired the question in a curious and flirty way.

Zaiden laughed, “Five minutes of getting my own command and you’re already asking for favours? That’s a record time for you, babe.” He kissed her again, “I’ll go through the official channels and see what I can do with it, but I’m sure it won’t be a problem. Just don’t be flirting with me while we’re on duty, okay?”

“Yes sir,” Helena responded with her flirty smile. She herself was a Lieutenant and a nurse but wasn’t interested in climbing the ladder like her husband was - she just wanted to help people and care for them in addition to caring for her own family and being a good wife. “We can celebrate later in a few more ways than one, but for now, help me clean up from lunch.”

“Yes ma’am.” Zaiden nodded and obeyed her request as he started to clean up the table from lunch by clearing the plates.

[Back to present day]

Avery and Finley ran up to their parents and looked up at them as they hugged into both and followed the line of sight to where the ship was. Their faces lit up as the overwhelm of excitement began to overtake them and their mouths forms an 'o' shape before turning into giant smiles.

Zaiden looked down at them both and ruffled Fin's black hair with another laugh, causing the kid to look up at him. "Take a good look at the ship you two, this is going to be our home for at least the next five years. You're going to attend school with all the other kids, make tons of new friends, and it's going to be the best thing ever!"

He looked back up at Helena for support as he saw Avery's lip begin to tremble at the mention of making new friends: she wasn't as outgoing as her brother and enjoyed the few friends she already had. Helena crouched down and took Avery's face in her hands, "Baby girl, they'll only be a video call away and when we get shoreleave, you can go see them again too. Just think of this the same as where we were last year. You'll be okay, I promise." She kissed her on the cheek and hugged her for the reassurance.

"Dad," Fin asked, "Can we get a tour of the ship and see where you'll be working?"

"Of course, bud!" Zaiden said with enthusiasm as he turned back from Avery and Helena. "You know what? Why don't we get something to eat and then I take you for the tour?" He laughed as he watched Fin nod his head vigorously and jump up and down with excitement. "Come on then, let's go."

Before they started to walk back to where the cafeteria was located, Zaiden reached for and took Helena's hand to bring it up and kiss the back of it with a grin while looking at her. They'd perfected the art of non-verbal communication and this was one of those moments he didn't need to say anything for her to know what he meant.

The kids ran ahead while the adults walked, and the lunch and short tour was a success too - the perfect beginning to an amazing opportunity.
