[Earth Spacedock - Present day]
Commander Zaiden Isaac - the newest starship captain within Starfleet.
It wasn’t an uncommon goal for a Starfleet officer to want to become captain of their own ship one day, and Zaiden wasn’t a special case for it. Indeed, he had tailored his career around that exact goal - starting in Engineering and working his way through the ranks, through the positions before eventually getting to Second Officer before Executive Officer on his previous posting, the USS Sparrow. And now, thanks to those who believed in him, he was the Commanding Officer.
Standing in the observation lounge from the space dock, Zaiden took a deep breath in and out as he felt the anxiousness start to grow from deep inside and tried to steady it; it was just over a week and it would be his home, his family's home, for the next five years.
The tremor working its way up his left hand and into his wrist was stilled, much to his surprise, by a smaller, more slender hand working to interlace its finger through his own. The hand Zaiden knew in an instant: Helena, his wife. He turned his head and glanced down at her, kissing the top of her head as she rested it on his shoulder and looked at the ship too.
“You made it, my love.” Helena said quietly, her voice full of emotion and love for her husband.
“I wouldn’t have done it without you though.” Zaiden replied back quietly as he slipped an arm around her and smiled as they continued to watch the view.
[The Isaac household, Pacific Heights, San Francisco - Four weeks prior]
The squeal of laughter from six-year-old Avery rang out down the hall as Zaiden snuck up behind his daughter and picked her up and onto his shoulder before tickling her until she forfeited being a brat and melted into a fit of giggling as he placed her back onto the ground. A hearty laugh and wide smile came from Zaiden as he declared an early victory and his daughter an easy target.
As Zaiden was crouched on the ground, Avery’s twin brother Finley took a running jump and landed on his father's back, wrapping his arms around his neck and holding on for dear life, much like a little monkey would. It was a desperate attempt to get the upper hand and win the battle they’d all been engaging in while their mother cooked up some lunch, but clearly, he’d overestimated his abilities this time.
A small “oh no” escaped the kid as he heard his father chuckle and watched as hands came up to reach behind and gently grab Fin’s arms to maneuver and flip him over in front before putting him in an inescapable bear hug. Finley struggled in vain but the grip wasn’t released and he eventually slackened after a minute or so, and Zaiden took that as a sign to toss him onto the bed and laugh. Even Avery joined in with the laughing as she jumped on her bed.
“Hey, what’ve I-” Zaiden began with a slightly more serious tone before he was interrupted.
“Lunch is up, come and get it guys!” Helena’s voice sung out from down the other end of the house. It was always music to his ears, and he couldn’t help but smile at it.
“Go wash your hands and come straight out, okay?” he continued, casting a look at them before they did as he said and went to wash up for lunch. He filed out of the room too but headed to the kitchen instead.
The kitchen, much like the rest of the home, had a timeless feel with soft white cupboards on the walls and a greyish-blue on the lower cupboards, silver door handles, an island with a matching greyish-blue countertop, and a soft white built in sink with barstools to match, sleek silver appliances, and some darker angled floorboards to finish it off. Helena was standing behind the counter serving up lunch: a grilled chicken salad with honey mustard dressing for the kids and a grilled salmon salad with a cilantro and lime dressing for her and Zaiden.
“Have I told you how much I love you lately, babe?” Zaiden said as he walked behind Helena and gave her a quick kiss on the crook of her exposed neck before moving again to go and get the cutlery to set the table for her. He had been sweet on his black-haired, blue-eyed wife for half his life and fell in love with her more and more each day, and their kids were the added bonus as a by-product of their love.
Helena laughed and said, “Only about five times so far, and it’s only 1300 hours, so there’s still time for more.” She motioned with a small flick of her wrist over to the right where a message was flickering on the view screen waiting to be read. “There’s a message waiting for you once we’re done. It’s from HQ.”
“And I’ll probably tell you a million times more before the night is through too.” Zaiden’s head snapped between what she’d said and the view screen, and he could feel the colour drain out of his face at what it could be about. “HQ, did you say?” he said quickly with a clearing of his throat, an already angled brow raising slightly as he tried to cover the surprise. “I, uh, I wasn’t expecting anything. Not today anyway.” He continued to set the table and focus on it primarily but kept looking up towards her.
“Yes,” Helena confirmed as she brought the plates over to the table and sat them in order before placing a warm hand on his shoulder. “Be optimistic, my love, it’s going to be good news. I promise.”
“I trust it will be” Zaiden was in two minds hoping that it was the news he was to gain command of a starship and not a rejection or a waitlist for it.
Lunch came and went - delicious as always - and Helena sent the kids outside to play with the neighbors dog while the adults stood at the view screen to see what the future held in store for them all.
